The prevalence of underage drinking increases with age, making it more important
than ever to begin teaching youth at an early age about the dangers of alcohol.
In response to the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to prevent and reduce
underage drinking, more than 1,600 town hall meetings will take place all across
the country in March and April 2008. These meetings are designed to raise
awareness about new information on the public health risk that this problem
poses as well as the steps that communities and individuals can take to combat
and prevent it.
The purpose of the Town Hall Meeting is to increase community awareness on the
issue of underage drinking, identifying how it affects the community, and
brainstorm possible solutions. The meeting is an opportunity for parents,
teachers, officials, youth, and other community members to voice their concerns
and suggest ideas for preventing young people from using alcohol. A panel of
local and state professionals will speak and answer questions.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is
sponsoring these meetings in collaboration with the Federal Interagency
Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking and state and
local organizations.
The C.A.T.S. mission is to promote safe habits for all youth by increasing
awareness of high-risk behaviors, encouraging healthy choices, and fostering
community alliances in Chester, Derry, Hampstead, Salem and Windham.
