History and Legislation
On January 17, 1996, after 9
teenagers lost their lives in less than a year and a half, over 70 people
representing the local community, High Schools, Police Department, Fire
Department, Emergency Medical Squad, Parkland Medical Center, Driver Educators,
and the victim's families met to discuss ways of preventing further teenage
fatalities due to car crashes in the greater Derry area. These citizens of the
Derry/Salem area formed a task force to solve the problems of teen fatalities
from driving accidents. This task force grew to become the Community Alliance
for Teen Safety, or CATS.
This community-based effort was
spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Sabato, Director of Emergency Medicine at Parkland
Medical Center.
To Increase community
awareness, CATS has held a walk-a-thon each May that focuses on a
different issue relating to teen safety, such as violence, suicide, substance
abuse & underage drinking. The funds that are raised help to continue the
mission of CATS and to promote safety among teens.
CATS is a SAFE COMMUNITIES program as outlined by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and as of 1999 is the only SAFE
COMMUNITIES program in New Hampshire.
In March 2000,CATS was awarded the International Safe Communities Special
Achievement Award at the 5th world conference on Injury Prevention and Control
held in New Delhi, India for its SAFE COMMUNITIES efforts
